NASHVILLE,
Tenn., Aug. 03, 2001 -- DIRECTV, Inc. and Hughes
Network Systems will begin marketing DIRECWAY, a 400kbps satellite-based
broadband service. DIRECWAY will enable DIRECTV to offer high-speed
satellite Internet service with its digital multi-channel entertainment
services and market it to its existing base of over 10 million
customers, as well as new customers throughout the United States.
The DIRECWAY hardware features the new DIRECWAY antenna that provides
broadband Internet service and access to more than 225 channels
of DIRECTV programming, including movies, news, sports and family
programming, DIRECTV PARA TODOS, HDTV and local channels in 41
markets, all through one single dish.
DIRECWAY will be available through independent satellite dealers
and retail outlets later this year. The broadband service price
will be between $59.99 and $69.99.
"With the addition of DIRECTV to our other DIRECWAY partners,
DIRECWAY will now be marketed to a combined base of over 45 million
existing subscribers of television and Internet services in the
United States," said Paul Gaske, executive vice president and
general manager for Hughes Network Systems. DIRECTV joins the
growing ranks of Hughes Network Systems' partners, which includes
America Online, Earthlink, Pegasus, NRTC and Juno.
"Even more importantly," continued Gaske, "the DIRECWAY service
enables new and existing DIRECTV customers to get the best of
both worlds, all from a single dish."
The DIRECWAY-based broadband satellite offering will be offered
in addition to the DIRECTV DSL service, which DIRECTV began marketing
to consumers this spring.
