Nelson Leonard Cuts Halle Berry and James King for Revlon
Halle Berry for RevlonIn launching its new ad campaign, Revlon has adopted a different approach to selling beauty care. Instead of the customary celebration of glamour, Academy Award-winning actress Halle Berry and top model James King bring a distinctive human touch to two spots directed by David Cameron, A & R Group, for Deutsch, and edited by Nelson Leonard, of Editing Concepts.

The spots, "Halle" (:30, :15) and "James" (:30), focus on personal experiences and how Revlon Colorstay make-up plays a key role. Using simple backdrops and a relaxed visual approach Berry recalls arriving after a late night flight, half-asleep and looking less than her best, being ambushed at the airport by a swarm of photographers. In King's spot she lists her wide variety on interests, including kung fu, writing, vintage clothes shopping, and guitar playing to a voiceover, "a make-up that can keep up with you."

"For this type of project an editor usually picks shots of the talent at their best," said Nelson Leonard, Editing Concepts. "The challenge I faced was that they looked great in every single shot," he laughed. "So I had to find the best of the best."

"Editing the spot was more like cutting an interview than a cosmetics commercial," stated Leonard. "Each talent was asked 10 or 12 questions, and they simply answered. Both have a fervent presence that carries over very naturally so no extra flash was required. The strength of their personalities propels the spots."

"It feels great to be a part of redefining Revlon," added Leonard. "While glamour is important, it's nice to find beauty in more unaffected aspects too."
